Anxiety Q&A

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural state of being when you’re faced with a threatening or fearful situation. When you experience anxiety, your central nervous system reacts. Increased production of stress hormones causes your heartbeat and breathing to quicken, your body to tense, and your senses to sharpen.

When you’re in danger, these bodily reactions are helpful to prepare you for escape or action.

But, if you experience anxiety on a daily basis, especially in cases that don’t require such an extreme reaction, it can take a toll on your body and psyche over time. Anxiety can make you avoid activities and interactions, interfere with personal relationships, and diminish the quality of life.

What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Anxiety symptoms vary from person to person, but you may experience any, several, or all of the following:

  • Unwarranted nervousness or tension
  • Increased heart and breath rate
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Feelings of weakness
  • A sense of impending doom
  • Difficulty concentrating on anything other than the present concern
  • Panic attacks
  • Gastrointestinal problems, like stomach ache or nausea

You may start to limit activities and social interactions for fear of triggering symptoms of anxiety.

Why did I develop an anxiety disorder?

Exactly why certain people develop anxiety disorders is unclear, but it’s likely due to a combination of environmental factors and genetics. Experiencing a traumatic event can also make you prone to anxiety.

Substance use can worsen anxiety. Certain health conditions and medications can also contribute to anxiety, so be sure to reveal your entire health history to Dr. Ayeni when you come in for an appointment.

What treatments relieve anxiety?

Dr. Ayeni sits down with you to understand when and how your symptoms developed and how they affect your everyday life.

Medication can help some people manage anxiety, but usually, it’s not the only treatment approach. Working closely with a psychiatrist using talk therapy and counseling helps you build coping skills to better deal with triggering situations and events.
