PTSD Q&A

What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops after experiencing a traumatic event. It’s often associated with veterans who’ve been at war, but anyone can develop it after experiencing or witnessing violence.

PTSD causes people to experience unwanted thoughts or memories of traumatic scenarios.

What are the symptoms of PTSD?

PTSD can show up in many ways. A person with PTSD may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Unexplained anger
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Distressing dreams
  • Social isolation
  • Sleep disruption
  • Disruptive flashbacks
  • Reckless or self-destructive behavior

A person with PTSD may feel like they are always on guard. People with PTSD may develop substance use disorder in an attempt to numb their emotions and flashbacks.

What types of experiences can lead to PTSD?

Not everyone who experiences trauma develops PTSD. However, when people do, it may be in response to situations like:

  • Automobile accidents
  • Rape or sexual assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Environmental disasters like hurricanes or earthquakes
  • Severe episodes of bullying or racism

Childhood abuse or neglect can lead to PTSD, too. Certain professions, like law enforcement or first responders, are more likely to experience workplace stress that can cause PTSD.

You don’t have to be a victim or active participant in a traumatic event to suffer PTSD. Even witnessing an event can be traumatic and lead to long-term mental health struggles.

How is PTSD treated?

Dr. Ayeni personalizes his approach to each patient with PTSD. Talk therapy is an important part of treatment. It can help you understand how to respond to painful and negative emotions in a more healthy manner. He may offer exposure therapy, which helps you tolerate triggering situations over time.

He may also prescribe medication as part of your PTSD treatment plan. You may benefit from antidepressants or anxiety medications, depending on your symptoms. When offered at the onset of treatment, they can help calm your symptoms enough to help you benefit from behavioral therapy and counseling.
