Eating Disorders Q&A

What are the most common eating disorders?

Eating disorders affect some 28.8 million Americans at some point in their lifetime. The following are the most common types:

Anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa causes people to severely limit their food intake and restrict portion sizes. They have abnormally low body weights as a result and are intensely afraid of gaining weight.

Anorexia may be characterized by excessive exercise, laxative use, purging, and restriction. Excessive exercise, laxatives, and purging may also be employed as ways to reduce weight. People with anorexia suffer from malnutrition, heart problems, and organ failure.

Bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa involves binging and purging. A person may experience uncontrolled eating episodes during which they consume a large amount of food in a short amount of time. They then purge by vomiting, excessive exercise, or with laxatives. People with bulimia may be preoccupied with their weight and body shape. They may feel inadequate and struggle with restricting food between binges.

Binge-eating disorder

Binge-eating disorders describe when a person feels out of control when eating and consumes large amounts of food quickly. You eat more food than you intended and may eat even when you’re not hungry. Patients with binge-eating disorder may feel guilty and ashamed but don’t compensate for their binges with purging.

Who is at risk of an eating disorder?

Eating disorders often develop in adolescence and primarily affect young women. But, anyone of any gender or age can develop one.

Genetics, life experience, environmental factors, and personality traits contribute to the development of eating disorders.
